Empowering Excellence: unleashing peak performance, resilience, and
leadership Capabilities
MENTALLY TOUGHER LLC was founded in 2016 by Michael Sherman, a sport psychology and resilience expert. He has extensive experience in the field of sport and performance psychology and has been a Master Resilience Trainer since 2015. The creation of MENTALLY TOUGHER LLC is the culmination of a dream dating back nearly two decades. He strongly believes anyone can learn, incorporate, and see a benefit from intentionally training mental skills.
Our mission is clear and simple: to have an IMPACT on as many people as possible.
Michael grew up on the east side of Cleveland, learning early that life does not hand out shortcuts. At age four he taught himself to skate, and the ice became his first classroom. Hockey sparked a lifelong obsession with performance, discipline, and figuring out what separates people who rise under pressure from those who fold.
By age twelve he was caddying at a local country club, spending sixteen summers watching athletes and leaders up close and seeing firsthand that the mental game is usually the difference-maker. Those early experiences shaped the foundation of what would eventually become Mentally Tougher.
Midway through his undergraduate studies at Kent State, Michael made a hard pivot. Six months from earning an education degree, he switched to psychology and committed to sport psychology. That decision led him to Miami University, one of the top graduate programs in the world, where he trained under pioneers in the field and sharpened his tools for real-world performance.
Since 2015, Michael has served as a Performance and Resilience Expert for the United States Army, training soldiers around the world in mental toughness, leadership, and decision-making under pressure. It is work he considers an honor and a responsibility.
Off the Army footprint, he has worked with Division I athletes and teams, UFC fighters, first responders, and leaders across multiple industries. During the COVID-19 crisis, he was called on to support frontline medical staff and has since trained thousands of healthcare professionals across more than ten hospital systems.
When he is not training minds, he is still on the ice, working as a collegiate hockey referee and serving on the boards of the Texas Collegiate Hockey Conference and the Central Texas Hockey Officials Association.
Mentally Tougher was built from these experiences: decades of performance under pressure, years working inside tactical communities, and a commitment to helping people show up better at work, at home, and in every arena that matters.
